World Cancer Day is a day set aside annually to raise awareness about cancer, its risk factors and encourage individuals around the world to take responsibility for their health by making healthier lifestyle choices and getting screened.
With improved education about cancer and more medical facilities offering help World Cancer Day will open opportunities to reach out to your community and improve someone’s life. On February 4th whoever you are and wherever you are you have can take action.
Did you know that at least one-third of common cancers are preventable? Making someone aware of early symptoms can lead to early detection which improves the chances of successful treatment of this disease. Up to 3.7 million lives could be saved each year by implementing resource appropriate strategies for prevention, early detection, and treatment.
Cancer is the second-leading cause of death worldwide. Nearly three-quarters of cancer deaths occur in low-to-middle income countries. With over 9.6 million people globally reported to die every year from cancer-related conditions, the Volunteer Medical Corps(VMC) is set to shine the light of hope to people and families affected by cancer around the world on the 4th of February 2020.
What is VMC?
It is an NGO and part of the Chris Oyakhilome Foundation International(COFI). It operates as a” Christian medical outreach providing medical care, relief assistance and sustainable health care solutions in regions of crisis and to communities in dire need”.
Anyone who is committed to providing humanitarian aid to communities and people I need can join. If you want to promote healthcare and improve the equality of life for those in need then it is a great organization to commit to working with.
Join the VMC as they are set to change the narrative
Here are some ways to get involved and start reaching out to your community. You could visit a hospital and distribute relief materials. Visiting a patient and talking to them with a smile is priceless. Talking and listening is a great therapeutic tool.
If you have the skills, then organize a beauty therapy session for cancer patients. If you ask your local community hospital or clinic you can enlist your friends to help. When you have finished you should take a picture to boost the recipient. As if you can share your pictures of the makeover with VMC via email and let’s inspire more people to come together and take action.
Organize a sensitization program focused on cancer prevention in your locality. Medical education is a key component in disease prevention. Education will prevent unnecessary stigmatization which can inhibit those in need of treatment-seeking it. Whatever you organize share your success on KingsChat with the hashtag #iamandilead.
Donations are welcome
A donation of $30 will sponsor hygiene kits for cancer patients in low-income communities. Any donation is welcome. Sponsoring reading material designed to spread positive messages of hope will be appreciated by those who are affected by cancer. Books like ‘Healing from Heaven’ by Pastor Chris Oyakhilome contain testimonies of hope and healing.
