Biblical Reference to Marriage
One of the questions Pastor Chris addresses on the site Pastor Chris Online is from Florence from Zimbabwe who asks: “Is there a biblical reference to marriage in wedding vows?”
Pastor Chris starts off by saying that marriage is in itself a vow. The wedding is just the ceremony for the marriage to formalize the vows.
“Without a wedding in a church, you are already married. A wedding is just a ceremony but take note that I am not playing down the importance of a wedding in the church. Whether a marriage takes place in a church or not, it remains a marriage. A marriage doesn’t need to have a ceremony hence, whether or not the marriage ceremony took place in a church, it is still a marriage.”
Someone may ask then, Pastor Chris continues, “why do Christians wed in church?”
Pastor Chris answers: “Christians wed in church for many reasons. You know that being a member of the body of Christ means that you have come into a new family and that means everything we do in church is related.”
“Even when you have a child, you bring that child to church for dedication. That doesn’t mean that until the day the child is dedicated, God will not have his hand on him or her. These things are symbolic. There are things that we are taught to do as a way of life. Even a Christian who is in a place where there is no local assembly and therefore has not gone to church doesn’t mean he is not a Christian.”
He continues to say: “But God wants him therefore to be a witness for Christ and that is why we encourage believers who are in a place where there is no local assembly to start one. Call your pastor and inform him that there is no local assembly where you are. He will then tell you what to do and you will become the extension of the body of Christ.”
“The church is important and we have become attached to it. That is why everything that we do has become church-related. That is what happens when you become a Christian. It is not because God will not recognize your marriage if it doesn’t take place in the church.”
