This Time on Perspective – Friendship

This past episode of Perspective on LoveWorld USA discussed the topic of friends and the company that we keep. They began the episode with a verse from 1 Corinthians:

“Do not be misled: Bad company corrupts good character” (1 Corinthians 15:33)

As Christians, it’s always important to surround ourselves with a community that shares our beliefs. A group of family and friends that respect and share our faith in the Bible. The four hosts of Perspective. Stacy, Natasha, Sharon, and Diana discussed this issue. They brought in personal stories from their own lives demonstrating the importance of choosing your friends well. Don’t miss out on the whole episode linked at the end of the article.

Stacy

Just as God command, evil communication does corrupt good manners. Depending on who you are around, those who surround you will influence you, in a positive and in a negative way. When I was growing up my mother always used to tell me not to keep too many friends around you. Now I get it, friendships need to be meaningful. Scripture when it comes to friendships:

“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly” (Psalm 1:1)

Keep an eye out for the kind of people that are around you. If for instance, you’re a young Christian and a lot of your friends don’t go to church or don’t even believe in the Word of God. If then you’re faced with a challenge and you go to that friend, that person may very well steer you in the wrong direction. The Holy Spirit said you don’t have to do anything, just keep following me. Not all friendships are fruitful

Natasha

Show me your friends and I will show you your future – who you surround yourself with will influence you and where you’re going in life. Pulling someone down is a lot easier than pulling someone up. It’s a lot easier for someone who’s not living the right life to bring you down to where they are if they’re not willing to go to where you’re going. Surround yourself with people that believe the same thing, and that is going to challenge you to get deeper in faith and revelation of the Holy Spirit.

Sharon

When people in your life start noticing you’re going to church and getting closer to God, they initiate separation. The Holy Spirit guards you against these people so that you can be closer to the Lord.

“…evil men who want you to be their partners in crime- men who turn from God’s ways to walk down dark and evil paths” (Proverbs 2:13)

Many times people will try to steer you in the way of “enjoying life” that is partying, drinking or clubbing. Yet they are pulling you away from God. That is exactly what this scripture is all about.

“Follow the steps of the godly instead, and stay on the right path, for only good men enjoy life to the full” (Proverbs 2:20-21)
